Hi Dr. O, Is there a time of year which would make giving the double dose of Strongid paste (for tape worms) more effective ? Thanks |

I'll be interested to see what Dr O says. I'm in his neck of the woods, and my vet recommended the double-dose in November (or it may have been early December). The next dose was regular ivermectin, and the next one after that is to be Anthelcide. Beyond that, I don't remember the cycling of these 3 (maybe Dr. O can refresh my memory?!) |

Currently we are unsure what is the best time. Logic suggests to me that the beginning of cold weather might be the best choice. If you are substituting this for a regular deworming or are using Anthelcide (oxibendazole) in your rotation program you need to read the article on deworming. DrO |

We have been advised to do two double doses in March and September, but this year it will have to be now (Febraury) as is we leave it till the next wormer and use a furexel (ivermectin) it will be too late! |

Dr.O: Getting ready to doubledose Strongid to my 900lb mare for the first time. She's been on 6-week ivermectin schedule up till now (no Anthelcide); my plan is to give her regular Rotectin 1 now and doubledose in three weeks time with Strongid, then three weeks later continue with ivermectin to finish out the year - then do a year with Quest. Before I stuff her full of paste (poison?!), just wanted corroboration that my schedule's good. Also, any side effects to watch out for during the next six weeks of intensive worming? Thanks for any input ... Susan |

This sounds fine Susan, I presume you know the Rotectin 1 is ivermectin? DrO |

Dr. O, I've had my 20-year old mare on a consistent dewormer program since I got her a couple of years ago--but, after reading your article, I think my program been misguided (rotating Strongid, Ivermectin and Anthelcide every two months). I'd like to "re-start" based on the article's recommendations, but was wondering... I last dewormed my mare August 1 with Strongid and have been waiting for the first hard freeze to do a double dose to get rid of tape worms. But we (strangely) haven't had a hard freeze yet. My question is: Should I wait until a hard freeze to deworm (which SHOULD happen in the next couple of weeks...but I've been saying that for the last month and a half), or do it now? And do I understand the article correctly that once I do the double dose, I should deworm again 6 weeks later (since the double dose should be in addition to, not in place of, a regularly scheduled deworming)? Laura P.S. My mare is in excellent health. No weight loss, diarrhea, etc. |

While it would probably be safe, I do not do it unless there is a clear indication of a tape problem: wait until the mare gives birth then treat. DrO |
