I am going to be breeding Lilly again in March. We are going to start her on Regumate (or something else if this post helps) around the first of the month, then 10 days after, use estrumate or lutalyse, then the hcg when she has a large enough follicle. Not sure if we will have to use Regumate post breeding or not, and hope we won't have to use oxytocin! Anyway, the barn manager has refused to touch the stuff, so I am wondering if there is an alternative maybe injectible that I could use instead. The current plan is to put it in a plastic baggie with enough of some kind of feed to absorb it, and have the manager dump it on top of her feed. Thanks, Alicia

I am afraid nothing works quite like Regumate. DrO

Darn, OK. I hope she will be willing to open a sandwich baggie and pour out some sweet feed that I dose with the stuff.

Hi Alicia, I have several older broodmares on a daily routine of Regumate which will taper off towards the end of their pregnancy. I've used the stuff for years. It is expensive and I've never found a 'cheap' place to buy it (hope someone knows of one) but the key is quality control. I always wear gloves, keep the equipment (buckets, etc) that I use to administer it away from the mares that don't need it and I've never had a problem. I just don't take risky chances with it. Sometimes being overly careful pays off.

Marti, My plan is to mix it with feed (enough so that it is absorbed) and put it in plastic baggies. That way, all she will have to do is open the baggie and empty it on top of Lilly's alfalfa pellets. Alicia

Hi Alicia, I too have used Regumate in the past and had very good results. I don't know how it would work in the feed. It is important that the mare get all of her dosage. I would guess the baggies could be opened without your helper spilling the Regumate where it shouldn't be, or getting in all over herself in the process. I've always given it with a syringe. Does your mare get a powdery substance that it will mix well with? Otherwise, you might find it at the bottom of her bucket.

Sara, My mare gets alfalfa pellets and oil only. Any sweet feed she will gobble up at lightning speed. She is like anyone who isn't allowed sweets, she loves them! According to Dr O and all the articles, top dressing feed is an appropriate way to feed. I am expecting the barn manager will put Lilly's feed in her bucket, and dump this packet on top, or just put this packet in another bucket to make sure she gets it. Actually, I think using a separate bucket will work great, thanks for helping me brainstorm!! Alicia
