Hi Dr. O,

I am trying to figure out if dividing a 1 gm dose of Bute to giving .5 gm dosage BID is more effective than a one-time dosing? Not sure what the duration of effect is.

Have any studies shown that any dose less than 1 gm per day is effective? And do you recommend an anti-ulcer med concurrent with long-term bute?

Thanks,

Cher Mc.

It sort of depends on how you define "more effective" but for chronic pain I would say yes dividing the dose to twice daily gives more effective pain relief as once every 24 hour dosing the effectiveness wanes a bit the last several hours.

I have a bute question. I searched for related and came up with nothing.

My pregnant mare is due late March. She is uncomfortable due to lameness. Can I give her a low dose of bute daily until she foals? If so, how much? She weights 1582 pounds. (I have a digital scale in case you wondering how I know.)

Thank you,
Denise

Hello Denise,
We discuss bute and pregnancy in the article on bute. You can access it by clicking on » Phenylbutazone (Bute) » at the top of this frame.
