I have a 3 yr old filly that has been diagnosed with a fungal infection (Positive skin scraping for fungus). I have tried all of the topical ointments and washes that the vet has prescribed. The fungus will seem to go away, and then comes back about 2 weeks after I finish the treatment. We have tried contintuing treatment for up to 6 weeks after the symptoms disappear and the fungus comes back.

My vet is talking about putting her on Fulvicin(sp). I couldn't find any information on it in the medication menu, and am wondering if anyone has any experience with it.

Thanks for the help

Heidi

Hello Heidi,
We had an article in the works on Fulvacin so I finished it and put it up in the Medications: Antimicrobials section.

DrO:

Thanks for the info, I just have a question. When I had the skin scraping done on my filly, I didn't have the lab do the speciation (sp). They ran the test on a general media for fungus. Should I have the test re-run and have them try to identify which fungus is causing the problem? Will it matter, as far as whether or not the Fulvacin will work?

Thanks,
Heidi

It will not matter as long as it is one of the ringworm type fungi. Ill bet they ran a DTM culture that looks for a color change if it is ringworm and it is a pretty good test.
