I have a very healthy quarter horse mare that carried her foal 367 days and did not have a big bag when she foaled. The foal is now six days old and is fine although the mare is not milking enough. The filly did get enough colostrum and the IgG test was clear. However, my vet has the mare on Domperidone (10cc once a day) along with resupine (1.5 cc per day). He said the resupin was needed to make the domperidone work most effectively. I have called two universities and two large breeding farms and they had never heard of injecting resupine in conjunction to the domperidone. I began to worry about the severely sedated mare and took her off after three injections. I kept up with the domperidone. She is milking better but it's still not enough and I'm having to supplement the foal. What is your opinion of the resurpin and have you heard of its use in reproductive diseases? Incidently, the mare was not on fescue and this lack of milk is a big problem in our area of Mississippi this year.

I too am unfamiliar with the use of reserpine to bring on lactation and find that domperidone does a great job with no help. See the article on Fescue Toxicity for more on the use of this drug. Prolonged gestation and agalctia, sure sounds like fescue toxicity. Are you sure of the hay and grass you are feeding?
