Hi, I have a mare that becomes into season very strongly and very often during spring and summer. She is quite disturbed by these seasons. My question is: I've heard of a injection that can be given to the mare to make the seasons less often and less strong. I don't plan to breed my mare, so I would like to know if there are any indications I should not do this? My mare is Impressive bred, I have not had her tested yet and would like to know if there are even more indication not to do so for a mare with a HYPP potentiality? Also are those injection worthwhile, any good? Thanks |

I had my mare injected but it didn't work on her, plus the area of injection got HUGELY swollen. I felt so guilty! I keep my mare on Regumate year round because she goes into heat so frequently and is miserable to be around. It costs only about $50 per year, well worth it. |

Oops, make that $50 per month! |

Hello C and P, Pamela probably had a progesterone in oil injection and her experiences are common. The very expensive Depo-Provera has also been advocated but at commonly used doses does not stop cycling. Some do report a favorable change in behavior though. I have not seen this personaly. Regumate remains the safest and most effective treatment for managing estrus. DrO |

Hi Dr. O, Do you see this quite often in your practice? Also, have you seen this more frequently in mares w/some common breeding? We, too, have a mare w/Impressive bloodlines that experiences this same thing. We have a Welsh pony mare and she doesn't estrus this frequently. Is Regumate available over the counter or only by prescription? If OTC, do you recommend giving this to mares that frequently estrus? We do not plan on breeding our mare this Spring/Summer, however, right now she is around 2 studs (in separate pastures). Will her estrus cycle become less frequent once we get her home and only around another mare and gelding? (She is at the neighbors right now while we finish our barn and fences.) Thanks for your advice, Julie |

To answer your questions we would need to know: How often does your mare come into heat, how long does she remain in heat, and does being in heat interfere with your goals for the horse? Perhaps reading the articles Equine Reproduction: Breeding and Foaling: Breeding Patterns in Mares might give you an idea if your mare is abnormal. Then by studying the articles on abnormal cycles and Regumate you can answer some of these questions yourself. If you get stumped post a new discussion in the appropriate forum. Good Luck! DrO |

Dr O, I still feel I didn't get an answer to my question. What does the vetenerian inject and is it dangerous (especially for an Impressive bred mare), and is it worth it? In the spring she comes into heat about every 3 weeks, She is disturbed enough to bully me (lightly minds you...) and she stays in heat for about 1 week to 10 days. My goals is to keep my horse a little calmer as I donn't need these heat I am not a breeder! My farriers says ... mares... get a gelding... but that isn't an option with me! Thank you. |

Claudette there are several possible injections (see my first reply above) and as stated above one has a common side effect of causing soreness and the other is expensive and has questionable efficacy. Better is to administer Regumate orally daily. We have an article on this drug in the Medication: Reproduction section. Is there an echo in here? DrO |

Hi there, I am new to the board as of today. I do not know about the shots for your mares heats, but to answer one part of your question regarding IMpressive breeding - you can get her tested for hypp. If you do not know what her results are she may be N/N, N/H or H/H. IF she is N/H or H/H, she may have signs of this disease. I just got a 1 yo gelding with n/h and I do see signs which he is on meds to keep at bay. Hope I could be of some help. |
