Anyone, please feel free to give me some advice:

I have a 12-year-old Morgan gelding whose leg joints began clicking about six months ago. Then, shortly thereafter, he began to get stiff in the back leg(s). We had him tested for Lyme disease......negative. My vet did the usual leg tests to check the hocks and he was good, just with a mild limp. No radiographs were performed. It was the vet's opinion that he probably has arthritis, based on the snaping noises in his joints. It was recommended that he undergo injection with Cortisone, monthly injections of Adequan, and Legend before showing. On the days that we work him (every other day), we give him a Bute.

My question: Is there any type of supplement that I should or could give him that would help him, along with the above-mentioned injections? Right now he is on Duralactin, but apparently, its efficacy is undetermined. I would like to give him a supplement (if there is one) that has been proven to help with the pain and the inflammation.

Thanks!

Lori

The snapping (I usually think of it as a click) noise is not a good diagnostic indicator of arthritis as many sound horses make this noise also. Before beginning such a regimen I would want more specific localization of the lameness, for more see Equine Diseases » Lameness » Localizing Lameness in the Horse.

For more on oral supplements for arthritis see, Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » The Joint Protective Treatments.
