Dr. O,
I'm using dexamethasone for sweet itch and have started using MSM. Are these two together ok? At this point the only other thing added to his diet is vit e and daily wormer. I have stopped the asprin and have not used the bute.

From a safety standpoint the MSM is fine but from an efficacy standpoint I think it is a waste of money. See the article on alternate day therapy in this section for how I manage sweet itch.

I came across this thread by accident. Kim, are you using MSM for DJD or similar? If so, you may want to try MSM in conjunction with glycasamine and condroitan sulphates, which works wonders. A friend of mine has a horse with DJD which he keeps sound on a blend of this which is found in a local product called Equi-Flex. If you want, email me at tracey@tbt.co.za and I will give you more details. If I am way off then perhaps you should just give me a pat on the head and ignore me - I'm used to it.

Tracey,
I'm using it to possiblly help with his allergies, specifically, to thoses little black flies that are out in hords. I was told it is an antitoxin as well as helping with inflamation. As the bugs are sooo bad right now i don't feel ADT will be an option until summer hits and he is on daily Dex. I tried to reduce it after aweek to 3 ml but couldn't so I was hoping the MSM would allow me more leeway so we can use ADT sooner. We'll see. If it is doing no harm i'm ready to try anything-including vanilla to keep the flies away as someone else posted. (That did seem to work on me and smelled good too, but would take way too much to be effective on a horse!)

I am wondering if anyone is aware of using Azium to help with head shaking due to allergies. My 4 year old Quarter Horse has started to do this. I have been advised by a trainer who saw this in another horse and azium helped alot. However, I show AQHA and azium is prohibited. If I have to use Azium, would it be on-going, or a one-shot deal? What is the withdrawl?? Any help would be appreciated, or I won't be showing this year. A real shame and huge disappointment after all the work we have done. :(

Hello Leslie,
Unless your post has a direct bearing on the initial question or subject, you should post your question in a new discussion to prevent confusion.

There is a better topic for your discussion that is more specific to your question. By using the appropriate topic you might find already existing information on your subject, get feedback from members who have a interest in that topic, and make finding related information easier for others with this problem.

I suggest, Training Horses: Behavioral Problems: Head Shaking. After reading the article you might run a search on the topic also as this is a frequently discussed one.

If your question still remains unanswered select the appropriate forum and select: New Discussions. Choose a title that is descriptive so that others can find your post easily.
Thank you for helping to make The Advisor better,
