Posted on Friday, May 5, 2000 - 10:13 pm: Hi,Dr.O. I have a mare who's 1year and a week in foal, not bagged. I'm starting to get concerned. I've called my vet and he say's just keep waiting. Is there anything that could be wrong? I've been reading through some of the articles, and keep reading about fescue- I'm in Canada I've never heard of this toxin do we have it here? Were just turning into spring our mare has been on hay all winter. any info would greatly be appriciated-thanks Melanie. |

Not just with the spring grazing, many people put up high concentrates of fescue in their hay. What type of hay are you feeding? Our mares that we consider late to foal, have carried 1 week short of 12 months. After 12 months with still no signs of getting ready, that would concern me as well. I would have the Vet out to check the mare for himself & consider inducing her. Good luck & let us know what happens. |

Posted on Saturday, May 13, 2000 - 11:40 am: Hi, thanks for the feedback on my question. I had my mare checked and no foal. Noone can seem to give me any answers. We had her preg checked on july 6/99 and she had a 60 day pregnancy, but her last breeding date was april 28/99. she did bag up a little and was waxing on may 8/00- but still no foal. our vet checked her and said there's no foal-but why she did'nt know. The mare hasn't come into heat the last 13 months, so we had every reason to belive she was in foal, her first foaling was uneventful and she did'nt get overly big so we did'nt get concerned. Anyway I had 2 vets do rectals on her and neither one could find her ovaries-I'm hoping everything is okay with our mare. It took us 4 years to get her in foal the first time. This past time we had to give her prostaglandin to remove a stale follicle but after that she did catch-for awhile anyway. My main concern is why this mare was in foal and than showed no signs of heat-some signs of pregnacy and now still no signs of heat. She is 16 but in excellent shape. What can we do for future pregnancies? Does she have some sort of hormone problem? There's probaly enough questions for one message Dr.O, and thanks Lanna for your response. Melanie. |
