I bought a 4 yo TB gelding who was very dull, with a drooping lower lip. Trained for the track but refused to run. I was alarmed when told by a vet that he was given a "long-lasting" tranquilizer. I was horrified to hear from a friend that another vet had mentioned something used on the track that he referred to as the "liquid lobotomy". I am fearful that whatever they gave this beautiful horse may have done some permanent damage to his nervous system. Could a tranquilizer make a horse permanently depressed? What could this long-lasting drug be? Thankfully, this horse has, over the past several months, lost the droopy lip and is getting somewhat more animated through ground work and easy riding. Any thoughts??? |

Hello Tundra, I think it all a bit of an exaggeration. There are two long acting tranquilizers: reserpine and fluphenazine both of which will wear off in time, maybe 4 to 8 weeks but since I do not use them I am pretty unfamiliar with the particulars. I am unable to tell if that is what happened to your horse or not. He may have just been suffering from poor care when you got him. DrO |

I use reserpine for my hot mare. I need to use it every two weeks. It doesn't last long on her. Does any one else use reserpine? What is your experience? |

I used it once with a long stall rested horse and we were just bringing her into hand walking. She was having a hard time keeping 4 legs on the ground. I found that she was quite sedated for a day and mildly quiet for ten days. That was enough to get us going. I wouldn't use it on a regular basis for many reasons. Kerry |

There's a very good article in the June issue of Practical Horseman regarding Reserpine and other similar type drugs--whether or not they are legal for showing (FEI and USEF), dosages, side effects, etc. You may want to pick up an issue. |
