Recently saw an article somewhere that was entitled "DMSO harmful to joints"
Do you know anything about this? Would really like to read this article since I am applying DMSO to my month old filly.

The question I would have is WHY are you applying DMSO to a month old fillys joints?

Hello Joy,
The answer to the question, "is DMSO harmful to joints?" is currently unknown and almost assuredly depends on:
1) Whether the joint is healthy or diseased
2) Concentration and method of application
3) Frequency and length of time used

There have been several recent research findings that DMSO at concentrations around 5% have a negative impact on cartilage culture in petre dishes. This is probably what is being reported.

This is a long way from saying it is harmful to an already diseased (inflammed) joint. It does preach caution in its use particularly with joint lavage as this technique may result in intra-articular concentrations approximating the experimental concentrations that resulted in problems. But this still does not address the results of such treatment in diseased joints.

On the other hand we are pretty sure it will reduce inflammation in a joint when applied topically.

I would be doubly cautious in a rapidly growing foal and have a hard time imagining a scenerio that I would use it but that does not mean you do not have one.
