I have searched the list and have not found any tips and tricks for giving medicaitons to horses. I need to give a horse that is off his feed some medications and would welcome any tricks and tips that anyone has. One I got from my vet was to mix the powder into peanut butter and smear it into his cheek. This works pretty well but sticking my fingers in there is a little nerve racking. |

Hi Karen, if you can get him to eat at all I have found hiding in a bran-mash with lots of molasses to be helpful. My horse won't touch feed that he senses any medication in! Another trick is to put in a liquid (e.g., water, apple juice) or thin puree (e.g., applesauce) and use a big syringe. You put it at the back of the throat the same way as the de-wormer. good luck Teresa |

If the medication will melt in a little bit of water, and they almost all do, it can be mixed with yogurt and not only will this all go through the syringe it is thick and sticky enough to stay in the mouth. It helps to cut the nipple off the syringe if it is a small nipple for a needle. Be careful though horses can crush the syringe if they bite down on it. DrO |

Dr. O - My horse is on a 45 day course of doxy-- for lymes and I was wondering if it's OK to mix the crushed tablets with yogurt and molasses. Also, can I give him his previcox and/or bute during the 45 days or would it be too much for his stomach? |
