I have a 13 year old TB mare. She is a very nervous horse! I have had her about a year now and she has come a long way since she has been here. My goal is to of course eventually ride her but I feel she has a long way to go with ground work first. I introduced her to her fly mask today and I spent and hour + just getting her not to be afraid of it. I rubbed her down with it and slowly worked up to rubbing her face with it. Maybe...in a week or so of doing that I will be able to get it on her. There is a very long story behind her but to make it short she suffers from "flash backs." From what I have no idea. I talked to her previous owner and she made me fully aware of her condition and that she has flipped herself in ties before being so uptight. (She had also got her like that.) I love her to death and only want her to relax and enjoy the attention more. Any suggestions on something to try would be very appreciated. Thanks...Tracy |

Tracey, besides the already existing articles and discusssions in this section there are dozens of related discussions on this subject in The Advisor. Back up to Anesthetics and Sedatives and read the already exisiting articles and discussions then run a search using calm and nervous as the search words. You will get ideas from all sides of horse management. DrO |

Tracey, it sounds like you're doing all the right things. I know it takes a LOT of patience, and some claming agents might help your mare "over the hump" but, in the long run, it will take lots and lots of what you have been doing. If you just remain patient - not easy I know - it will pay off in the end. |

Sounds like your mare was very lucky to find the right person. You might be interested in reading about the ttouch method by Linda Tellington Jones. From the articles I've read, this method appears to work well on horses that are being rehabilitated. My mare really enjoys the touches and exercises. There are also ground exercises for increasing the confidence of the horse. There's a web site at www.lindatellingtonjones.com and also a email list at majordomo@goodhorse.com} (look under discussion group on the web site for instructions) |
