Hi.My foal started with respiratory symptoms about 3 weeks ago.(nasal discharge, slight cough and low grade fever).Waited 1 week, vet checked and prescribed 7 days of bactrim.Seemed to get better but nasal discharge and cough still present so vet prescribed another 10 days of Bactrim. After 7 1/2 days, his nasal discharge seemed to get worse as did his cough.Switched to azithromycin yesterday .Still coughing this morning and still has nasal discharge tonight.Temp 38.5 tonight.Has never gone off feed and is bright /active.Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks,Sylvie

Sylvie, since you have had a vet involved and you are still having problems I will make a suggestion. Try Levasole cattle wormer boluses. We have used this treatment for many years. The dosage is 1 large (cattle) size bolus for each 750 lbs of horse. For a foal, I would use 1/2 of large bolus. Crush it up, I use a little electric coffee grinder to crush these or bute, or sulfa pills into a powder form, it really works slick.
Put that into his sweet feed and mix it up. If you don't use sweet feed, or something that it will stick to, you can put it in a bit of applesauce and syringe it into him. You do this on day one. Then you skip a day and do it again on day 3. Then you skip a day and treat on day 5.
Usually by day 3 when you give the 2nd treatment,
the cough is gone and the nasal discharge is reduced. It is imperative that you do the 3 treatments, even if they are over the symptoms. If, by the 7th day they are not over it, you can give a 4th treatment. We have only had to do that once, they are usually cleared up by then.
Good Luck.

Welcome Sylvie,
We discuss clinical signs and treatment of common respiratory diseases at Diseases of Horses » Respiratory System » Nasal Discharge, Cough, and Fever. However in foals there are two other considerations with persistent respiratory infections if there is any sign of lower respiratory disease see:
  • Diseases of Horses » Respiratory System » Foal Pneumonia: Rhodococcus
  • Diseases of Horses » Colic and GI Diseases » Parasites and Worms » Roundworm Infection, Parascaris equorum
