I bought this mare from a university's Eguine Dept. They noted in the little notes they give when selling a horse what they know about the horse. She had a puncture wound ,they treated her w/ pro.pen and she had a reaction and suffered colic . so they stated that she is allergic to pp. She was 18 mnths old then and I have had no reason to use any antibiotics on her ( she's 6 now)My vet just told me that you can kill a horse w/p.p. and I read some stuff on this site about anaphylctic sh. What is the deal with this I almost always give my own vaccines soo when I aspirate and there is no blood i go on w/ injection sometimes i see blood on the skin after pulling out needle. If I had injected Procain Pen. and I have used pro.pen. on other horses how possible is it that I could kill a horse.Yikes!!

Hello Darryl,
I have gone in the article on penicillin to carefully explain the different reactions that occur with the use of penicillin. Used carefully reactions are uncommon but the question is are you sure the antibiotics were needed to jusify the risk? Over the last 15 years I have owned no fewer than 6 and as many as 20 or more horses, including many newborns at any one time. The number of times I have given antibiotics, to my own horses, in that time has been less than 6 times.

I have a mare that when given procain penicillin will sweat where the injection is made. I only give penicillin without the procain. My vet advised my doing this for the rest of her life. No use to take chances. If when giving shots, you pull the plunger back with the needle inserted into the muscle and there is blood in the syringe , YOU must not continue with the injection.
Good Luck.
