WE HAD A FIRE IN OUR AREA ABOUT A YEAR AGO AND THERE WAS ALOT OF SMOKE IN THE AREA, ALL THE ANIMALS WERE EVACUATED BUT WHO KNOWS HOW MANY HORSES WERE AFFECTED WITH THE SMOKE INHALATION? ABOUT 1-1/2 MONTHS AGO MY HORSE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH COPD. THE VET SAID THAT IT WAS NOT SEVERE AND HE DID NOT HAVE ANY HEAVE LINES. I WAS TOLD TO JUST FEED HIM A COMPLETE FEED AND HAY CUBES AND GRASS HAY AND TO KEEP HIM IN A DUST FREE ENVIRONMENT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. ON 8-19-01 HE HAD ALOT OF SWELLING IN HIS SHEATH AREA AND WAS RUNNING A FEVER OF A 106, HE ASLO QUIT EATING HIS GRAIN, WHICH IS NOT LIKE HIM, A FEW DAYS BEFORE. I CALLED THE VET THAT NIGHT AND THEY TOLD ME TO GIVE HIM BANAMINE TO BRING THE FEVER DOWN, WHICH I DID. ON 8-20-01, I CALLED THE VET OUT, HE DIAGNOSED HIM WITH INTERSTITIAL PNEUMONIA AND GAVE HIM A SHOT OF BAYTRIL 100 ANTIBIOTIC AND TOLD ME TO GIVE HIM THE SAME SHOT FOR THE NEXT TWO DAYS. ON 8-21-01 I GAVE HIM ANOTHER SHOT AND NOTICED HE HAD DIARRHEA WHICH HE DID NOT HAVE BEFORE. WITHIN THE NEXT TWO TO THREE HOURS HE WAS LAYING DOWN. THEN GOT UP AND STAGGERED AND FELL INTO THE FENCE, HIS HEART RATE WAS VERY HIGH HE WAS SWEATING, VERY LATHARGIC, HIS GUMS WHERE WHITE, AND HE WAS BREATHING VERY HEAVY. MY HUSBAND NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO GAVE HIM THE THIRD SHOT, AND HE GOT WORSE. ALL THE SYMPTOMS ABOVE. WE CALLED THE VET IMMEDIATELY HE CAME OUT AND SAID IF WE DONT GET HIM INTO THE CLINIC ASAP HE WONT MAKE IT. THE VET STARTED AN I.V. AND ALSO ADDED SOME SORT OF A SHOT INTO THE I.V. WHICH BE DID NOT TELL ME THE NAME OF. BY THIS TIME MY HORSE HAD CLEAR BLOODY DIARRHEA WHICH LATER THEY SAID WAS SAMONILLA OR E-COLI. WE GOT HIM DOWN TO THE CLINIC WHERE HE LATER DIED. THEY SAID THAT HE WAS NOT GETTING ENOUGH OXYGEN TO THE REST OF HIS BODY AND THAT HE ALSO HAD SUFFERED HEART PROBLEMS. I WILL BE GETTING THE BLOOD RESULTS FROM THEM SOON SO I CAN TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT THE READING WERE. THEY SAID THAT HE DIED OF PNEUMONIA? I DONT THINK SO, I THINK HE DIED OF ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK FROM THE BAYTRIL ANTIABOTIC THAT HE WAS GIVEN. HE WAS VERY SENSATIVE TO VACCINES AND GOT A REACTION FROM ENCEPHALOMYELITIS-INFLUENZA VACCINE, AND WAS TREATED FOR THAT REACTION WHEN THEY DIAGNOISED HIM WITH COPD. HE IS ALSO SENSITIVE TO FLY BITS ETC. AND THE VET KNEW THAT. I NEED SOME CLOSURE TO THIS, I HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME. THIS VET WAS NOT THE SAME VET THAT TREATED HIM FOR COPD, BUT, WAS FROM THE SAME CLINIC THEY WERE FATHER AND SON AND SON WAS THE ONE WHO DIAGNOISED HIM WITH PNEUMONIA. ARE THESE SYMPTOMS HEARD OF IN PNEUMONIA? THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME. SANDY MENDEZ AND AND IN MEMORY OF "FRED"

Sandy,
I am sorry for your loss. From here I really do not know what happened to your horse. The only way you can solve this mystery is by having a autopsy done on the horse.

In the defense of the veterinarian the sensitivities you list are not a contraindication for the use of the antibiotic and as of this time that are no other reports of allergic reactions like anaphylaxis with the use of Baytril (enrofloxacin) in horses or any animal species. Acute decompensation secondary to the pneumonia, could look just like this, with the horse looking pretty fair up until the horse could no longer oxygenate the tissues.

In support of what you say, the reaction is also what you would expect with anaphylaxis in horses and hypersensitivity is considered possible with this product.

I have placed all the scientific references about the use of Baytril in horses that I can find at, Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals: Antibiotics and Antimicrobials.

I keep trying to find the words that will help relieve your distress and all I can think of is that it always helps me at times like this to reflect on how fragile life really is. We are all here just a very short while so should try and make the best of every day. What a double-pity it would be if you continue to loose rest because of bitterness toward the person who did all he could to save your beloved horse. If you feel the vet had your and the horse's best interests at heart I feel that should be your focus and if there is doubt, give him/her the benefit of it and as you do I think you will rest better.

PS, I will move this into a new discussion in the antibiotic forum in a few days. Also Sandy, I know this is a bad time to be picky but discussions that are written in ALL CAPS are very hard to read and some will not take the time. You will get more responses if you use proper capitalization and punctuation.

I am afraid the blood work does not differentiate the two conditions. You cannot guess the severity of the pneumonia from this nor are there any pathognomonic (a sign when present is proof of a disease) blood changes in anaphalaxis. Acute decompensation from pneumonia or anaphalaxis may be appear very similar. I do think autopsy can differentiate them in most cases however.

Dear Sandy,
I am so sorry for your loss. Cathy put it beautifully and I cannot add to that.

I do have some experience with the use of Baytril in cats as I raised Himmy's and Persians for a number of years. It is an excellent antibiotic but can cause diarrhea in some animals and with continued use this diarrhea can become severe. When I first used Baytril, I ran into this problem with a Himmy and did confirm the side effect of diarrhea with my vet. We then switched her to Clavamox and all was well. You must understand though that cats are highly sensitive animals which are more prone to drug side effects. Forinstance giving Tylenol or aspirin to a dog will make them feel better, but giving it to a cat will kill it. I have no knowledge whatsoever about the use of Baytril in horses.

Sally,

I think Tylenol given to dogs will kill them too. Asprin only for dogs, and neither for cats.

Sandy ~

I realize this is an old discussion, but in case you're still watching, my gelding just underwent three weeks of Baytril IV therapy with no problems at all. Don't know if this would help or not, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

SO sorry for your loss :-(

Suzy
