I'm have a 'heat' problem with my 10 yr old mare. It seems whenever we encounter a group of horses she does not know, she will act like she's in heat. Her tail comes up, she winks, she stops to urinate frequently, she tenses up like a rubberband wound to tight and becomes hard to handle. She will do this whether she's just had her cycle or not. I've even tried Regumate to try and control it with no luck. If we are not around a group of unknown horses, even in heat, she's no problem. My question is is this a physical problem that I should have the Vet check for or is this a mental issue? If it's mental, anyone have any suggestions? |

Mental I am afraid. This would not happen to be an Arab would it? (I just checked your profile and I see that it is.) I dn't know why this hapens more with this bred just something you see. I would have her tested for Granulosa Cell Tumor (see, Training Horses: Behavioral Problems: Granulosa Cell Tumors in Mares) and keep your fingers crosed but I don't think it likely. I would do it anyway as this would be a nice simple fix. Assuming no organic problem I would work on establishing better control under all conditions: you need to establish yourself as the "head horse", the one to be listened to in new situations. Right now the mare believes she is dominant and must do something to protect the herd. DrO |

Yes, Dr. O, she is an Arab and I was afraid you were going to say mental, but I'll have her tested anyway. She did lose a foal about a year and a half ago. I'm going to start working with her and a trainer in a couple of weeks, so hopefully that will do some good. She hasn't had much training, actually none, for a 10 year old and I've just recently started riding her regularly. As always, THANKS! for help! Karen |

Dear Dr. O. I have a question regarding my 10 year old mare's heat cycle. She is my first experience with owning a mare, so I am not as familiar with what is considered "normal" in an estrous cycle. I keep track of her cycle and she seems regular, ex: displaying signs of heat (tail flagging, vulvar winking, urinating) every 21 days like clockwork. She's in heat for an average of 7 days, but she is very intense. She'll "display" for any gelding nearby or any mare, for that matter. My concern: she often has a dark brown-colored, bloody discharge staining down her legs, butt cheeks, etc. Urine stain, I can understand, but is this color and blood normal? It is seen either before or during a heat cycle. Thank you! Theresa Burke |

Hello Theresa, If you would copy and paste this question into a new discussion (back up one page to the list of discussions on this topic and the button is at the bottom of the list) it will help keep HA organized. I will post the answer there. DrO |
