I was wondering if showing, as opposed to just riding, a pregnant mare is OK. My mare gets pretty worked up at shows, and when I breed her, if I do, she will be a maiden. I also may end up breeding to Voltaire, which would make it very important for the breeding to stick (they only do frozen semen, and they only allow you to buy two straws, AND each straw costs 1500). So, would the extra stress of trailering to a show be too much strain? Also, is there a critical period in a mare's time to be extra careful, as there seems to be with humans?
Thanks,
Alicia

Though traveling with pregnant mares has not been shown to increase the incidence of early embryonic loss, you will also be exposing your mares to other horses which may carry pathogens that do cause abortion. Yes showing your mare will increase your chance of problems but no one can tell you exactly what that increased risk is but the fact that she gets "worked up" means it is higher than if she did not.

Is the risk of infection the same if I am diligent with vaccinations? Is there an article here I can read concerning the pathogens you are referring to? By "worked up", I mean she gets excited, and I usually have to ride her several times during the day to maintain an even keel. I also have to lunge, but I do that at home sometimes anyway. She is a typical "nervous" TB. So, I guess when and if she is bred, I have to plan on not showing her that season.
Thanks!
Alicia

Yes, vaccination is not a 100% guarantee. We have many articles on contagious diseases and abortion, run a search on abortion. What you need to decide Alicia is whether you want to show or to breed. It is not that you cannot attempt to do both, but if breeding is your primary goal why take chances, and if showing is your primary goal why let the breeding get in the way?

I will look up info on abortions. As to my primary goals, right now it is showing, when I breed it will be breeding (with her, not with my gelding :)). So, when my baby is ready to show full time, I will give her the year off from showing. That was my plan initially, I just wanted to see if I could start her breeding earlier.
Thanks,
Alicia
