My vet had me give my mare 15cc regumate for 10 days and then a 3cc shot of progesterone. 3rd day she had a follicle that he said was not a breeding follicle. On the 5th day, he scanned again and gave her an estrumate shot and flush.
I took her to the stallion. The stallion covered her 2x. The vet said that she wouldn't settle due to the small amount of fluid she had, the reason for the flush. However, the culture was clean.???
For my second mare, the same regumate and a shot of progestrome that is an oil base (100mg/ml) of 10cc on the 11th day was given. Geez.
This is confusing.
My question: I thought only infected mares needed / had fluid? She is a maiden. 2nd Why the difference in the shots?

Lola,
I am not sure I understand the history you have laid out above. Is the third day, the third day of the 10 days of regumate or....the third day of breeding? Neither is there enough detail for me to know what is happening.

I am afraid you are going to have to ask the vet why the difference in the treatments, I do not employ progesterone injections following a course of Regumate and am unsure what he is trying to accomplish with this.

Besides being able to read about each of these medications in the drug section, commonly used hormonal manipulation techniques in reproduction are described in Equine Reproduction: Breeding and Foaling: Heat (Estrus) Detection, Ovulation Prediction, and Timing Insemination.

Not all fluid indicates infection, it depends on the amount and what the cellularity of that fluid as to what is its significance. For information on the diagnosis and treatment of infection in the uterus see,
1) Equine Diseases: Reproductive Diseases: Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility: Uterine Culture and Cytology
2) Equine Diseases: Reproductive Diseases: Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility: Uterine Infection and Inflammation
Hope these help and I would like to know why he caps off the Regumate with an injection of progesterone?
