Posted on Wednesday, Feb 7, 2007 - 12:07 pm: I want to thank everyone for your help.Nirvana was foaled Monday FEb 5th 7.45am The picture shows her at 36 hrs old with the vets halter on Candy and the left-over bandage from a plasma infusion on Nirvana (filly)..standard at the facility. I did take Candy last Friday to the vet for foaling. I wanted to visit her on Sunday and was told that she wasn't due for another 4-5 days as Candy hadn't even started waxing. Well, so much for that! I missed the birthing which was very disappointing. However she is home now and I am starting a whole new adventure. Nirvana and I are going to learn how to do this together. Candy is extremely protective and although allows Nirvana around me she hovers with a watchful eye. Nirvana will be registered in Brazil as a Pampas: a cross between a Paint and a Mangalarga Marchador. I don't believe this registry exists in the US. |

Posted on Wednesday, Feb 7, 2007 - 5:10 pm: Ilona,Congratulations. Babies are so much fun, you are going to have a blast. Is it as muddy there as it is in Taos? Gorgeous filly, you must be proud!!! |

Posted on Wednesday, Feb 7, 2007 - 6:41 pm: Karen,Is it muddy? Do birds fly? I have decided that attitude is everything...the event/weather/conditions are going to be what they are. YES we are knee deep in mud (well, it feels that way!). Jos, These horses are bred for endurance. The Mangalarga holds the International endurance record for distance covered in South America. They are a wonderful breed, only about 100 are in the US. I have been quite involved with their introduction here. We have 2 geldings, Odisha and BoomBoom. Thanx for the encouragement. I'm intimidated by the responsibility and am committed to giving Nirvana the best start in life that I can. |

Posted on Thursday, Feb 8, 2007 - 8:00 am: Ilona - How exciting and what a cutie! Please refresh my old memory - did you know Candy was in foal when you first got her home? -Barbara |

Posted on Thursday, Feb 8, 2007 - 8:48 am: Hi Barbara,How are you doing? Are you and your husband out of casts completely? Yes Candy is the QH Paint that you mentioned was so well under saddle and would stop at the riders mere thought of stopping. She had heavy breathing when under saddle which you rightfully encouraged me to have vet-checked again. Well the breathing concern was directly related to her stage of pregnancy which was unknown because Marsha lied about due date, what a surprise! Candy was bred to one of her Mangalargas but we will be doing DNA testing to verify that, being that Marsha is known most particularly for her deception, not her integrity. The State of Florida is going ahead with criminal fraud charges the last we heard. We will be there for the trial and will let you know when that is as soon as we do. I want to thank you again Barbara for all your effort to ensure that we got sound horses in that settlement. I am forever in your debt. Remember the little black Paso Fino, Esmerelda, whose personality seemed aloof? She has settled in and is the most lovely mare. She is sweet, affectionate, willing etc. Candy, on the other hand, I think is still suffering from female hormone overload...she has never really connected with me. The only horse on the property not to do so. I have tried everything...time, treats, gentling with my voice, etc etc and nothing seems to work. She has been the only horse who does not come to me when called, or who hasn't let me stroke her in the corral. Nirvana, her baby is willing to have me do this frequently each day, however its tricky as at times Candy tries to get between us, not very safe. Usually, though, Candy trusts me to handle her baby, its just that she doesn't seem to like it herself. Any suggestions anyone? |

Posted on Friday, Feb 9, 2007 - 7:22 pm: Ilona, what a lovely foal! Quite deserving of her name. And, I think you are well up to the challange you have taken on. Keep updating baby pictures (this goes for all of you with new foals this year) Because some of us need "our fix" and aren't having any of our own. |

Posted on Sunday, Feb 11, 2007 - 5:10 pm: Hi Ilona -Definitely let me know when you will be in the area. I'd love for you to meet our 'kids' and see our farm. The hubby and I are currently both in one piece. Thank you for asking. I am glad things worked out with the horses and that the black mare came around. Candy has a pretty big wall for you to work through. Just keep trying and handle the baby as much as you can. The foals will learn from their dams if given the chance. But we've has some stand offish mares who's babies learned that we were OK despite what mom thought. Here comes a run on sentence - Can you tie Candy (with the foal right there) when you are getting aquainted with the Nirvana, so Candy doesn't try to get between you and her foal or will this upset her too much? Or how about at hay time will that destract Candy? Be safe - I know you are aware that a protective momma can be serious business. Let us know how they do, B |

Posted on Tuesday, Feb 13, 2007 - 11:50 am: Thanx Barbara,I will certainly be in touch before we come to Florida as I would love to get together there. As for Candy...she is a piece of work, very protective, and actually a great Mom. Catching her is more of a challenge than I am up for on my own. She is becoming more relaxed around me and as long as I keep my back to the wall of the run-in shelter she allows Nirvana to interact with me as she is not separated from her at all. I know I can't come between them. My only concern is her ability to kick me, but she has shown absolutely no interest in aggressive behavior to me, rather , just monitoring where Nirvana is located. I try to spend some time, several times a day with them, and she seems to slowly be relaxing. Its her first foal, and sadly, all 3 of us are learning simultaneously. I wish I had experience in this area. I do work with a great degree of caution as injury is not high on my wish-list. |
