How long after weaning does it take for a mare to completely dry up?
Thanks

I keep my mares separated by several fences at least 4 to 5 weeks. If you turn the mare back with the foal because you dont have seperate paddocks or pastures, then the foal may still try to start nursing again after even 45 days. If the mare allows this, she will probably come back into milk again! A friend of mine lost her mare to colic when the foal was about a month old. She turned the colt in with an older mare that she trusted to be his buddy. this mare had not had a foal in several years. lol and behold the mare came into milk for the colt and allowed him to nurse. my friend did also supplement the colt with buckeye milk and foal starter, etc, but I am sure he got some pretty good nourishment from his adopted dam.

If you can ride her some or get her out walking in a pasture situation, grazing along ,etc. she will dry up much better and faster.

For our suggestions on how long to keep separated see, Horse Care » Equine Nutrition, Feeds, & Feeding » Feeding the Growing Foal, Nutrition for Young Horses. But as Christine's friend experience shows, and is not that rare, this is a subject without hard and fast answers sometimes.
