I have a maiden mare that was low in Vit. E at the beginning of her pregnancy. I put her on a new and improved diet balancer with adequate Vit. E. I am wondering if I should give her additional Vit E at this point, she is 10 months pregnant. |

Hello Cindy, Without the particulars it is hard to judge from here, but if her diet has been adequate in vitamin E for the last few months, I don't see the need for more. I am interested in what the vitamin E status was when deemed low and what conditions led to the low levels. DrO |

Hi DrO, My mare's Vit. E count was 1.2, normal being 1.5 - 10. I had her checked because I have a yearling gelding that might have some neurological problems and his count was low. I really don't know why it was low, I'm guessing they just weren't getting it in their hay. They are Andalusians and very easy keepers so I didn't feed much grain. Now they are on Progressive Nutrition's ProAdvantage Hay Balancer and it is packed full of nutrients. |

Yes, hay can be an inadequate source of vitamin E. To better understand vitamin E issues including sources, conditions, and recommended dosages, see Horse Care » Equine Nutrition, Feeds, & Feeding » Vitamin E and Horses. DrO |
