Hello Dr. O,
One of my brood mares (approx. 2 weeks from foaling) has developed an extensive amount of swelling between her front legs (feels soft and spungy), no other symptoms other than she is also very swollen from her bag upwards towards her belly (feels hard). Should I be concerned?

Hi Melanie, I've had several of my broodmares, especially older ones, get fluid retention under their abdomens. If your mare walks around, either on her on, or if you hand walk her, it will help. It's like a woman who's ankles swell.

If there is the possibility of something else I know Dr. O will be able to tel you about it.

As Sara writes this is a common event in pre-foaling mares but on the other hand there is not enough information in your post to judge if yours in normal or a problem. For more on assessing this swelling see, Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses.

Couldn't help but notice that Melanie has another thread going on strangles. Could the swelling be related to the strangles outbreak? Ooops, I know you don't like to see "could it...?", Dr. O, but it jumped out at me because of the possibility of bastard strangles or pigeon fever.

Hello Dr. O
Read the article on swelling and the location shows that it is a normal place for mare late in pregnancy to have this. I will also take her temp and post results. No other symptoms, just the swelling.
Thanks,
Mel
P.S Thanks for the concern Erika and for the advice Sara.

Really cute, Melanie, and what a relief to have a healthy baby on the ground. Hope Mom is feeling chipper to keep up with Ragin' Roxy.

How adorable I've never seen a young mule before!
Do you have a picture with the head of mom on it to?

Hello Friends,
Thanks for the wonderful comments. Both Mom and baby are doing fine. I will get a pic this evening showing mom's head better. As to the question about color; yes they come in all colors. I have a dune, bay, dappled grey, grulla, palomino and red roan.
The other mare that was exposed to possible strangles is doing great with no symptoms except really pregnant. Any guesses on due date and sex (smile). Her official due date according to foaling calc. is March 17th, last year she was 5 days early. I will keep this going until she delivers...if she ever decides to.

I see now why your mare had the extensive swelling. Must have been the ears pushing forward. LOL

So cute.
