Hello,
I have a mare who we had palpated at about 5 months (I bought this mare at auction and the previous owner said she was in a pasture with a stallion, but hadn't kept any record of breeding). She has looked pregnant to me, and we guess there could be a baby anytime from February on. Last night while we were doing chores she showed signs of being in heat. Can this happen when mares are pregnant?
Thanks,
Andrea

It is possible, and some say it means the foal will be a filly. There is some overlap in the appearance of excited mares and mares in heat so you have to be careful judging from the behavior alone. Since the managment of a pregnant mare and nonpregnant mare are different you should have her palpated.

Hi,
We had the vet out, and she is pregnant. We should have a foal within the month.

DrO, We have a mare who showed signs of heat during pregnancy and it was a filly! Interesting.

We have a second mare (also in the same condition - both spent last winter and spring pastured with a young colt - long story.) The second mare showed signs of heat too. Interestingly, when 'open' she rarely shows signs of heat. She should foal within the next month so it will be interesting to see if the "filly" theory holds out with this mare too :-)

Andrea - congratulations on your impending arrival! We are really enjoying our first unexpected divided and looking forward to the second.
