My filly has only just turned one, she is turned out with some other mares with foals so some are colts. She is season every couple of weeks on the dot she squats and urinates and the colts even cover her, she actually goes over to them and asks them.

I have tried seperating her but when she`s in season she is loopy, the inbetween times she is fine but when she`s in heat for those few days she is uncontrollable and her urinating sends all the other horses male & female loopy unless shes left to run with them.

Is it normal for a filly at 1 year old to be so sexually active and is there any chance she could be fertile at this age? Thanks

HI

It's completely normal for her to be in season, although her behaviour may be a little 'loud' compared to other fillies.

Yes she can get pregnant, so it's a good idea to keep her separate from the colts, as they can be fertile too.

I bought a colt that was the product of a yearling filly and colt (he broke into the mare's paddock and managed to get three pregnant within 1 hour!!!), and although my little colt was OK, carrying him had 'pulled' the filly down - her size and maturity were stunted, so it's not a good idea.

The onset of puberty can occur as early as 10 to 12 months of age or as late as 20 months or later. The timing is greatly controlled by the time of year the foals is born. If born in the spring usually the filly will have her first heat the following late spring or summer. On the other hand those foaled in late summer may not have their first estrus until their second spring when they may be over 20 months old. It is poorly understood how fertile these postpubescent fillies are but we recommend strongly waiting to breed after 2 1/2 years of age.

She was 1 on the 27th April so not that early really. So she`s only just 1 year and nearly a month now. She actually came into season for the first time on her birthday. I have seperated her but her mood swings are really intense when she`s in season.
