I bought my mare 9 1/2 months ago. She was at a facility that had a stallion. I have noticed in the last couple of months that her belly has gotten bigger. Is she just getting fat, or could she possibly be pregnant. How do I tell if she is pregnant? I am a notice. I have never even been around a pregnant horse, so I have no idea how to tell. She just has a big belly. I can take a picture of her and send it to anyone who wants to help me out! Thanks for reading!! |

Can you find out if she and the stallion were ever in together? Do her previous owners know? If so, when? The best way to tell is to have her ultrasounded by a vet. You can't always tell by just looking at the size of her belly. Some horses get so fat on grass they easily look pregnant for instance. You need to find out for sure. If she is pg. there are vacinations she should get and you need to be sure she is getting proper nutrition for a foal and for her to develop milk. If she isn't pg. but is getting a big belly, then she may need worming, or need more exercise and a different diet. If you run your cursor over the reproduction section to the left, there is a lot of good information. It's a good place to start. |

Okay, new update!!!! Wow!! I e-mailed the girl I bought her from and asked her if they were ever together. She emailed me back on Thursday night and said yes, she had tried to breed them, but she didn't think the mare took. !!!! So, I was going to call the vet on Friday and her checked out. Much to my surprise on Friday morning at 5:30 am when I went out to feed her, there was a gorgeous little chestnut foal standing in her stall with her!! The vet came out on Friday and both are super healthy and super happy!! What a shocker for me. I was just starting to believe that she might really be pregnant and here he is! I will try to attach a picture, if it works! Thanks so much for the advice, I really appreciate it!! |

Teri, I am so happy for you...and as Karen said, you missed all the worry that comes with the territory. As far as I'm concerned...there aren't many things in life as incredible, wonderful, and emotional as having a healthy foal on the ground. Enjoy it all...and spend every minute you can with Jr., they grow sooooooo fast!! Best of luck and we all look foward to photos. |
