This is my first posting, so please bear with me!...
We have 2 pregnant mares that are shedding alot! "Lady" is a 12 y.o. Rcky Mtn. Saddle Hrse/TWH mix and is 325 days along and "Bay" is a 4 y.o. TWH somewhere around 250 days. We also have 2 TWH geldings and a horse/pony mare that have not begun to shed. I'm wondering if their shedding is due to hormonal changes. I'm not at all worried, they are both very healthy, but I am curious if this is a normal part of pregancy. Thanks!
Wendy

More to do with the fact that the days are getting longer and the increased plane of nutrition that would naturally be provided to pregnant mares.

Wendy,
We had the same thing happen to three of our broodmares last year. They looked pretty shabby as the hair came out in large patches rather than the usual overall shed. One of the mares was purchased in March and was supposedly not bred ("absolutely no exposure"). She is an older mare and everyone thought she just had a "hay belly". She was not fed any differently than our non-pregnant mares or geldings. When she started this wierd shedding too we became more suspicious and called the Seller who again said there was no way she could have been bred. Then she bagged up and a week later gave birth to a beautiful, healthy filly!! Our broodmares have started this shedding again this year. I can't really remember seeing it to this extent in years gone by but it is sure happening now. We just quit worrying about it.
