I have a 14 year old QH mare who has always been very lovable. She loves her daily brushing and all the special attention she can get. Well anyway up till a week ago, she now has 5 weeks before foaling and suddenly doesn't want anyone to touch her. Is this normal behavior for a pregnant mare or could something be wrong? I have searched everywhere in the advisor for some info on this.

Cathy, our QH mare acted just like yours. After foaling, she returned to her normal behavior.

Thank you George. Is there anyway of telling by the way her behavior has changed if she is getting close, since she won't let me check her for milk or waxing or anything for that matter?

This QH mare was bagging up and would let us clean her with warm water, but she was not happy about the process. The night before she foaled, she was ridden bareback as she was not due for a few days. Sometime between being ridden and the next morning a pure black QH filly was found in her stall with her.

Have you tried treats with the mare such as carrots, etc? Treats would always bring this mare to me and while she was munching, I could touch her to a limited amount and check her out.

While some mares change, as George notes, this is not always the case. If you think there may be something wrong I would first check if the skin has any problem that might make it more sensitive.

My mare made this same dramatic change 24 hours before foaling. She was already waxing. If I tried to touch her any farther back than her face, she would threaten to nip me. Back to normal immediately after birth.
