How long should one wait to ride after foaling. My mare lost her foal due to lack of oxygen during foaling. I have been told that I should wait for 2 months before riding. I left her with the foal until she decided to leave. She is eating well does not appear to be depressed. Welcome all suggestions on this subject.

gosh i am sorry for your loss and for the mare too.... i have never been in this situation, but am thinking the mare might welcome a job now..! i hve ridden my mares as soon as a week after foaling.. but in most cases wait a couple then the mare is back to work as a riding horse as well as a mom.. ( of course my/her priority would be mom )

good luck.. Ann

If the mare is healthy I cannot understand why you have to wait more than a few weeks (for exactly after the foal heat) which is the amount of time it takes for the uterus to significantly involute.

Thank you both for your answers. The mare has already gone through foal heat. It was a normal heat cycle no elongated time. She runs and bucks and plays out in the pasture and no one very heavy will be riding her. I really appreciate the people on this site. I never fail to get a response that is helpful. Thank you Dr. O. for this wonderful site and all the people who make it what it is.
