Last year one of our very young foals showed signs of founder. We put her in a stall, ( our horses are born, live and grow up on the pasture ) treated her as you would a horse who founders and hoped for the best. She never got any better, and was eventually adopted by our vet.
Now, this year we have a new foal crop and again we have a foal who is exhibiting the same symptoms. The foal is out of a different mare and a different stud. Could there be something in the grass? Perhaps the mares are deficient in something or just the opposite giving to much of something?
Our vet is really dumfounded, along with several clinics in the area. Is there anybody who has dealt with the same problem?? What could be the cause of this?

There may be some kind of noxious weed in the pasture that the mare ingested. I would do a thorough walk through and take a sample of the different types of growth and bring to your county extension office for analysis or better yet, see if they can come out and poke around. Also, take a hair sample from your mare and have your vet send to the lab for analysis as well. This will determine what minerals she is deficient in or what she has too much of, it will also show what allergies are present.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your foal.

Just curious - did you walk the pasture or did you call your local Agricultural Extensions Office to walk the pastures? Maybe you missed something. Sounds like something ingested.
