Over a month ago my mare was bred and stood 7 times for the breeding over the course of 7 days. After she returned home and about three weeks later she went into heat again. Is there such a thing as a false heat? Should she have an ultrasound at this particular time? Salley

Was she ultrasounded at 15 to 21 days after she went out? If not, just because she was bred for 7 days doesn't mean she caught. Should be able to palpate and/or ultrasound at this time and know whether she is pregnant. If not, you will know if she has a viable follicle to work with and breed her now if you don't mind a June foal. dLet us know her status. We had a couple of mares come into a sort of heat even tho they were in foal. EO

It's possible for a mare to be bred every day of her cycle for several cycles and still not be pg. Definitly get her ultrasounded, if you haven't already, so you will know what is going on. Did she have a pre-breeding exam and culture? If not it's possible she may even have a minor infection that will prevent her from "taking." However, it often takes more than one cycle of breeding to get a mare bred. (Unless, of course, you don't want her bred, but a neighboring stallion gets out and hops the fence. Then it's guaranted she will instantly get pg. from her "one night stand!"
