Hi, I'm a very part time (and not very accurate) ultrasound tech, I primarily do my own mares. Several times I have seen an early embryo (14-18 days) and the mares also have developing follicles. I've asked 3 Vets what the physiological reason is for this and no one knows the answer. Please help, I'm curious! Thank you, Annette

I am surprised you could not find an answer Annette as this is normal for mares and these follicles go ahead and ovulate. This is important for maintenance of the pregnancy for the first 100 days as it is these accessory CL's that provide a contiuous release of progesterone necessary to maintain a proper environment for the fetus. Thanks Dr. O, makes sense to me. The three Vets were equine reproductive vets and I'll let them know : >)

Hi, If a mare is inseminated,on Saturday at a 37+ soft, and on Wednesday, has a 25 on the other overy, is that a good indicator that she didn't settle? OR If she did settle and we inseminate again, it's there a possiblility of the latest follice being fertilized resulting in two embroys? Thanks, I have learned so much from this site, it is a daily tool for me. You guys are wonderful.

I assume you're doing AI? You didn't say, but I'm guessing the 37+ folicle wasn't there on Wednesday? How soon after insemination did the 37+ folicle "go?" Do you know? It would make a difference.

The presence of another ovulating follicle is neither supportive or not supportive of the earlier ovulation and as Sara says the timing of the ovulation and insemination important. My suggestion is to breed both follicles assuming this one matures and goes on and ovulates while she still is in estrus. I find my total conceptions with a single embryo at 40 days much higher with this practice and in large populations this practice results in 50% more successful pregnancies with a single conceptus at day 50. It does take careful managing for twins however, for more on this see Equine Reproduction » Horse Breeding & Artifical Insemination » Twinning and Management of Twin Embryos. DrO

Sorry Sara, yes we are doing AI. She was at the 37 soft on Saturday. We did the AI, gave her a shot of HCG and on Monday, the 37 was gone. My ranch hand got confused and thought she was one of the mares to be checked on Wed, and had her done again (I wasn't there, but had left instructions)on Wednesday, that's how we knew the other follicle had not ovulated. Unfortunately, I did not breed the last one, but will do so from now on. It makes good sense. Thanks for the input, it really helps.
