Posted on Sunday, Mar 13, 2005 - 9:11 pm: I apologize if this posts twice, but I couldn't find it when I went to look for it, so I'm assuming there was an error, and am posting again.I recently purchased a 15 Y/O miniature mare on February 12, and was told by her previous owner that she had been exposed to the resident stallion many times, up to the point that I purchased her and brought her to my barn, and could very well be in foal. She is a proven mare, and has had 3 foals by this stallion already. Considering this, I had my veterinarian out to ultrasound her on Thursday, March 10th. I was told that she looks to be about 6 months along from the ultrasound exam. There was what appeared to be amniotic fluid, however, there was no mention of visualizing a foal or heartbeat. Blood was pulled to check progesterone/estrogen, and the results came back as "incompatible" with a pregnant mare?? I have put a call in to my vet to have this better explained to me, however, I have not heard back yet and am extremely confused at this point. I can not understand what exactly was seen to "look about 6 months along" if there isn't a pregnancy as far as the blood results are concerned. This mare has definitely gotten larger the last month, and from what I have read and researched about miniatures and foaling, I would like to know for sure so that I can be sure to be there incase the mare/foal run into trouble during the birthing process. Also wondering if there may be a fertility problem with my mare if she was exposed that many times and didn't conceive? Any help or direction would be wonderful as I don't know where to go from here. I have also been told that the blood tests are inaccurate sometimes...and considering that we would have NO IDEA how far along she would be if she were in fact pregnant, I am wondering if that would have a profound effect on the blood work? ~Thank you in advance for any information/advice. |

You will find an explanation of how to do this hormonally at, Equine Reproduction » Horse Breeding & Artifical Insemination » Pregnancy Diagnosis. If you post the actual results of the tests already run I would be glad to comment. DrO |

Posted on Saturday, Oct 15, 2005 - 7:16 am: I have 2 arabian mares that look very much in foal. They should be a little over 4 months. I had the vet out to give them a pneumabort shot and he insisted on palpating them and it was no problem except he insisted my older mare isnt pregnant and refuse to give her the shot. I know this mare and I know that she doesnt show anything on a ultrasound as my previous vet said she carrys her foals too far down to detect and she had a foal that year.My gut instinct says she is in foal. She was in full heat when I had her bred. She accepted the stallion 5 days straight. She ignores my geldings and is very affectionate. She has that promanent vein running along her belly. My other mare got bred at the end of her heat 2 days. My question is can I safely give her a pneumabort shot even if the vet might be right and she isnt pregnant. I really afraid to leave her unprotected. kristin |
