Dr O

I live in Alabama and have 100 acre pasture with a mixture of bermuda, dallas grass and some fescue (not nearly as much fescue as the other 2, but this time of year it is the only "green grass" out there). I feed a good quality bermuda hay to my herd that is always available.

I took my mare off the pasture 90 days prior to foaling and had a healthy foal 10 days ago and the mare has good milk production. My question is when it is safe to put this mare and foal back out into this pasture? Can fescue effect her milk production now?

thanks in advance for your advice.

Once the foal is born it is thought to be safe to put the mare back on the fescue. I would consider slowly adding in 5 lbs alfalfa daily to the lactating mares diet to help with the increased protein and calcium needs of the mare.
