Dear all, I may just be being a worrywort.

Mare is due to foal in 2-3 weeks, she is constantly biting her sides for the last 4-5 days and I can see quite a lot of movement in her belly. There was some question about possible twins but I had an extra scan done on this mare at 40 days by a very experienced horse vet who told me definitely no twins. Should I get the vet to look at her? She did not show this behaviour last time she was in foal. No sign of bagging up but a bit of that sort of looks-like-whitefly-around-the-nipples...

Thanks for any advice

I would check for signs of skin disease Imogen but if this is the only sign you have I don't think it is a serious problem in itself. If you are very worried you should have the vet out for a look.

Thanks, I'll stop worrying... for the moment.

We have observed mares heavy in foal doing this quite often. It is just that they seem to be aggravated, foal moving around or maybe it is their skin stretching? None had any skin problems. I always thought it was sort of like a woman rubbing her stomach when she was getting close to term. EO

Yup, I'm sure she just wishes it was all over. It fazed me because I was watching her even more hawkishly before the last foal and never saw this behaviour then - I hope this doesn't mean I'm going to get Mr Hyperactivity Colt... as opposed to the lovely calm filly I got the last time around!

All the best
