I apologize if I posted this in the incorrect place. I couldn’t find an appropriate subject.

I have a 13 month old Warmblood filly. She is currently 14 ½ hands. Her dam is 16.2 and her sire is 16.3. Her dam has had only one other foal by a different stallion whom is much larger and that foal was 15.1 at the same age.

I have had a lot of foals and have guessed pretty accurately but this one is over a hand shorter at this age than all my others. I know that Warmbloods mature later. I keep impeccable records with measurements every other month. Given my records I can’t imagine that she will mature to anything over 15.3. Is it possible that she will grow 8 inches to get to 16 hands? I am selling her and I do not want to mislead anyone with her mature height estimate.

My question is: How can I estimate her mature height? I have read one of your articles but is goes by percent/ age and Warmbloods are not created equal in growth.

Thank you,
Denise

Yes, Denise, it is possible that she'll mature at 16hh. It's optimistic, but not too much.
Keep in mind, however, that a horse's shoulders are not fixed to the ribcage. An excited horse will measure almost an inch taller. Excercise will also add a couple of centimeters to the horse's height.
That is to say that a horse I honestly measure at 16hh may be 15.3 or 16.1 when it arrives at your barn.
As most people are happy with a horse a bit taller than expected and some will make a fuss for one inch less 3years later, I'd tell them 15.3 just to be on the safe side.

Denise check out, Care for Horses » Particular Situations & Procedures » Weight, Condition, and Eventual Height Estimation. It gives you tables to help you figure out the likely height of your yearling.
