Hi All,

What is everyone's experience with a mare's bag at 299 days.
This is my mare today, after spending the night in. The bag has increased noticeably in the last few days. Would you consider this a normal sized bag?

2999 day bag

I am concerned because my vet bred her once last year and said there is no way she could be in foal. We never checked her for a pregnancy...per the vet. (looking back, it was very stupid not to check her) So we found at when she was 8 months along that she is in foal. I am concerned about twins. She had them the year before and one was pinched.
Thanks!
Barbara

BArbara
if she goes out for a little exercise does it go back down? it does nto appear huge to me and sometimes they just stay that way for a while.
What has been her history on gestation time?

Like Debbie, I wouldn't be too concerned about her bag, especially if it is going up and down with exercise. Some mares get really big bags early on; some get big bags that tend to fill and "deflate;" others never even get a bag until just before they foal They all are different. Do you know the mare's breeding and foaling history - what she's done in the past? I keep records on all my mares as to what the do and look like at different stages of pregnancy. They tend to be fairly consistant, and I find the notes save me a lot of worry and wonder, and let me know if something is unusual for that particular mare. Good luck! No foals for us this year; I miss it all...and will miss the new foals, too.

Thanks Debbie and Sara, I dug out my calendar from last year. She did have a small bag starting right about now. It got a little smaller today after being out all day. She foaled at day 343 last year. This is her second foal. She is definitely not as wide as she was a week before she foaled last year but she does seem to be carrying a bit lower.

I think I am just feeling guilty for listening to my vet that there was no way she could be pregnant.

Thanks again,
B

Vets make the biggest fools of themselves when they start guessing at pregnancies. I think the bag looks just a touch on the full side for a little over a month to go but not abnormal.

hey Barbara, my mare is just one day short of her last gestation time at the moment, and her bag is about that big... Not meaning to alarm you, just to point out the variability.

This same day for my mare the last time around, she'd been running milk for 3 days... nothing like that this time. They do like to keep you guessing... The weather suddenly turned very cold here in Ireland the past couple of days so I suspect she's going to go quite a few days longer this time.

Hope it's not twins, try not to worry too much, at the end of the day there's not a whole pile you can do about it now!

All the best

Imogen

Barbara, I had 2 unltrasounds done on my mare with her last foal, one at 18 and one 25 days -on both the Doc said not pregnant. But I know her so well and she just seemed different so I treated her like she was pregnant - at 4 months had her re-checked by ultrasound - there he was flaying around. Good luck, I worried about twins too since we did not get a good picture but all was fine. Debbie

I know, nothing to do but wait. Even if there were twins, I wouldn't do anything differently at this point.
The bag has not increased any in the last few days. So, so far so good.
I will let everyone know when she foals.

Looking back it is hard to understand why the vet didn't want to check to be sure.
