Hi Dr. O. and others, I have a pregnant mare who is due the 25th of June. My horses have been in a small pasture during the snow and mud season. My fields are just getting dry enough to turn horses out in. I know that when the horses get out for the f irst time they are going to run flat out like idiots for a while. Is this a bad thing for a heavily pregnant mare? Thanks, Ella

At nine months I do not think she's so heavily pregnant, Ella. She can handle the race, don't worry. The problem with foolish days and pregnancies is that should an accident occur, the pregnancy may complicate medicating and treating injuries. Also, I think it is better to let all others blow some steam before turning the pregnant ones out, just to minimise the risk of kicks at pregnant bellies.

Risk lies everywhere but in general exercise is considered good for pregnancy. DrO

Thank you both for the response. I am sorry I am just replying but my computer is not registering my posts. I got on the site from another computer and was surprised to find my post did register. Christos, I did turn out the others first and added my pregnant mare last. It was fine. I guess she didn't find running with such a big belly a great idea. One quick tour around the pasture and she settled to eat. The only complete idiot was my 22 year old semi-retired mare! She ran like a fool! Its go od to see them out in the springtime. Thanks again, Ella

I'm posting under an old post but I've just got to ask... A friend of mine has a mare that is about 3 months pregnant. My friends 20y/o daughter is over 200 pounds and running barrels and racing this mare. Is this mare in any danger of aborting? I've not said anything but it's making me nuts. If you tell me this is ok, I'll stop worrying! Thanks!

Hello Ginger, Abortion is always a possibility whether exercised or not but reasonable exercise does not increase this danger. There are other issues for horses traveling to competition, for more on this and the exercise issue see Equine Reproduction » Pregnancy, Foaling, & Neonatal Care » Pregnant Mare Care and Nutrition. It has been my experience that stress is a bigger factor for abortion in the early months. If they are used to the excersice then by all means. But if it causes stress, physical or mental, then I would try to minimise it.
