Hi Lori,

It's likely to depend on the particular registry. Suggest you contact the registry in question, or check their website to find out.

In Holland [and a few more European] studbooks you got a preliminary paper for a foal until it was presented in front of judges as a three year old, then they got a premium[1,2,3] and got approved [if they were acceptable] measured and branded.
Apart from that most Studbooks have another colour paper for horses 'partially belonging to their studbook. They can come from another studbook not recognized by the other one[happened a lot with for instance Hungarian horses before the European borders opened] Or they can be bred from parents not approved [mostly the stallion ofcourse if for instance someone used one of his own not approved stallions] or from parents unknown[one ]
The next generation then would get a 'normal' paper.
Hope this helps
Jos

Oh, yes it does very much. I think that is a very good system.

I am not quite as clear on the paper.
For instance, on a horses registration both parents are reg Hanoverian, but the horse is reg Westphalian.
So, at some point the horse was moved to Westphalia, (do I have that right) and the registry there gave it a pink paper?(I am guessing this is because they don't re register, just acknowledge that the horse is already registered and acceptable for their breeding program).

Thank you for your help.

Hannover and Westphalen acknowledge each others horses. Good chance someone bought a mare [pregnant] in Hannover and the first foal is registered like this.
If they would have wanted a Hanoverian registration they would have had to travel back with the foal to have it get a brand when it was still together with the mother.
What brand does the horse have Hannover or Westphalen?

That's Westphalian and they branded her so she must have been there as a foal. I would guess imported in mother.
