I am in a quandry. I have two mares that are pregnant. One is 21 with heaves and the other is 13 in perfect health. They were impregnated by a loose stud. The 21 year old is about 7 months pregnant and the 13 year old it about 3 months pregant. They have both been on fescue pasture for a little over a month. I would like to abort both of them as the new pasture we planted in millet will not be up for about another month or two and the mare with Heaves cannot have any type of hay. Is their a set time in which they can not be aborted safely?

Hello Dayle,
Abortion at anytime after the fetus has gained any size has the potential for dystocia, retained placenta, and/or uterine infection. However with careful monitoring the chance these will have serious consequences are not great. There are well established procedures for prior to about day 150 but how does your veterinarian plan on doing the abortion on the one 7 months along?
