My mare is 5 months along in pregnancy. Her annual vaccines (E/W/T/F and WN) are due this month (April). I normally administer my own vaccines. Should I give her her annual boosters now or wait until 30-45 days before foaling? If not, should I give the annual vaccines now and then repeat them in August? Seems like overkill to me? I would prefer to wait if that is OK to do and if it would not be compromising her immunity. She has already received her 1st Pneumabort shot this month. We have little to no movement of horses on my farm and I don't anticipate anyone leaving or entering the farm this Summer.

Hello. How old is your mare, and what is her prior vaccination and disease history? Are you in an area with a significant incidence of any of the diseases (esp. WNV or rabies?).

I was going to tell you what I would do, but then realized that I am absolutely driven by the history of my broodmares, and by the prevalence of certain diseases (for me, WNV) in my area. So I guess I would advise you to listen to DrO, and to make the health of the broodmare the top priority, if it's in question-- that will be critical to producing and raising a healthy foal.

elk has it right: it depends on your risk vs benefit and not all diseases we vaccinate for are contracted from other horses. The EEE and WEE vaccines are not that good much past 6 months to a year. Waiting 5 more months takes you into mosquito season, so this is a judgement you should make based on how much risk you see.

To help with making this judgement we discuss the efficacy and any unusual reactions of the various vaccines in each of the articles on the particular disease so you can check how well your vaccines protect.

Thanks for the feedback -I guess my biggest concern was if there were any safety issues with vaccinating now and then repeating them in August when some of the vaccines say repeating them annually is the norm. We do have a significant mosquito problem so I would be most concerned with the EEE and WEE and WNV and the safety of giving them again so close together. My mare is 5, this is her first foal and she has always received annuals for the diseases I listed (including rabies).
