General question for future reference:

If a lutylase shot is given to a mare 9 months pregnant do you think it could cause a problem? A friend didn't think their mare was pregnant (only ultrasound was at 15 days). Also no pneumabort K shots have been given. Suggestions?

Why were they giving her lutylase? Did they give the shot themselves, or did they vet do it?

Lutylase usually relaxes the cervix. I don't know, but wonder if it could cause premature birth. You can read about it: go to "Treatments and Medications" - "Reproductive Drugs" - "Dinoprost, Lutylase,Synchrocept"

I would discuss with the vet on the pneumabort. I think there is some conraversy about it's use on pregnant mares.

Though certainly NOT recommended one injection at this stage of pregnancy may not have an adverse effect. The reason for the difference between 9 months and early pregnancy is Lutalyse works by lysing the corpus luteum. The CL supports the pregnancy early but this is taken over by the placenta later. For more on this see Treatments and Medications for Horses » Reproductive Drugs » Dinoprost, Lutalyse, Synchrocept.

If you wanted to be extra careful you should consider the use of Regumate for the rest of the pregnancy.

Thanks for both your input. The owner thought the mare was not pregnant and was not coming into heat. The only ultrasound was negative for pregnancy. It was done at 15 days. My guess is the mare ovulated a couple of days after breeding and the embryo was too small to see when the mare was checked. The mare is doing great so far. Clearly this foal should be called "Surprise"...assuming it is a filly.

Thanks again,
Judy
