Dr O.
We are observeing a mare that gave birth 2 days ago go through what appears to be extreem episodes of contractions. These are drastic enough to cause her to go into a full body sweat very rapidly and illicit a strong desire to roll. The vet was called for the first one but it resolved prior to his arrival. He was not too concearned about it but it is reasonably upsetting for those of us who have to watch her do this. They seem to come once a day. Is this a normal thing? and if so how long would this be expected to last?
Thanks- Emily

No it is not normal Emily and suggests to me trauma to the reprouctive tract or associated vasculature. If it is still going on this morning I would have a recheck. Important is whether it seems to be improving or worsening.

She had two episodes, spaced roughly 24 hours apart from one another. The seccond was much less sever and after the sweating passed she appeared normal. The seccond time she was not trying to roll either. As of today she has not done it again, at least not that was caught by the on lookers. Her birth went without major complication except for a minor tear in the vaginal opening and a bit of delay in passing the placenta. She had to have a shot of oxytocin and passed it, in tack, about 10 hours after the birth. She was put on anitbiotics as a precaution.

This mare is known for being a bit of a Drama Queen, but this was her finest performance yet. At this point she is still under close observation just in case.
