Hi Doc,

New Appy colt born Thursday evening, and Mom and baby are fine. It seems like he's nursing a lot, but her "udders" are not emptying out. Should they be? I can express milk easily, but I can't tell if he's actually swallowing. He's super cute (like his Momma!), and active as can be, but I'm a paranoid....um....Uncle! Thanks,

Larrycutie pie

We have a Qtr horse mare that milks like a holstein cow. Her udder always looks full, even though the foal nurses a lot. Look at her teats, as longs as those are down, not full of milk after the foal nurses and the baby isn't gant, and is active, I wouldn't worry about it. Just stand back and watch the baby get fat and grow like a weed. CUTE BABY. We used to have Appaloosa Race horses and I can appreciate one that LOOKS like an Appaloosa. Was the sire loud colored too? Gosh, that's a cute baby, but what's all that white on the mare and foal? Something wrong with them?

We also had a mare ( Arab) that always looked like a dairy cow waiting to be milked. She could easily fee 2 or 3 foals. So long as the baby is looking and acting o.k. I wouldn't worry. Some mares just over produce.

Yeah - very funny. It's called AN APPALOOSA!! It's what quarter horses and paints wish they could be.

The sire is a Bay Arabian (spectacular as he surely is, www.kpmca.com) and the breeder is thrilled that he throws color, too! So far "Cody" is great, and I'll try not to stress more than necessary. Thanks,

Larry

Khornerstone Arabians stallion? The Khemosabi son? He's very nice! No wonder the foal has such a nice head. (Sorry. Being an Arab breeder I'm partial to dished faces.) Don't stress. Enjoy your "cutie."

Great picture Larry,
I have to say if he is looking healthy at this time, so he must be nursing. Usually you can hear the slurping sound and see them swallow by carefully watching the jugular groove on the left side. By now you should have a blood IgG result that will reflect adequate nursing.

Michelle, a second is one-one thousand. Is that all he is really nursing and if so how often? Can you hear him nurse?
