I think my vet called it something like that? Lacy, my little mini should be 5 months pregnant. she was supposedly bred 6/18/10. I got her 8/1/10. She has never come into season, and is around my geldings. The vet said he is not comfortable doing the palpation of a mini, and that I could just start her on the series of shots. Just wanting to double check if that was OK, and also, any other things I should be doing at this age of pregnancy? thanks suz

Hello Susan, There are blood tests for pregnancy that can be done and you can read more about them at HorseAdvice.com » Equine Reproduction » Horse Breeding & Artificial Insemination » Pregnancy Diagnosis. We cover the care of pregnant mares at HorseAdvice.com » Equine Reproduction » Pregnancy, Foaling, & Neonatal Care » Pregnant Mare Care and Nutrition. Minis are cared for very similarly but you have to watch their weight much more carefully. . As to giving vaccines that may not be needed the risk is low but not zero, there is always a possibility that you may have an adverse reaction see HorseAdvice.com » Horse Care » Horse Vaccines, Vaccination, Coggins Test » Vaccines and Adverse Reactions. The night that I had the vet give Lacy the pneumobort vaccine, is the night we found her on the floor, without explanation. She was sore on the right front leg, vaccine was given on right rear. Now I am worried that it was a reaction, or just a coincidence? Others have given shots, and not given shots and had normal pregnancy/delivery. Since her risk of exposure to other horses is nil, can I skip the next dose? thanks sue

There is a question whether the herpes virus that causes abortion can arise spontaneously in the pregnant mare resulting in abortion, you can read more about this at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Respiratory System » Rhinopneumonitis: Equine Herpes Virus (EHV1/4). What symptoms did she have that make you think this was a vaccine reaction, certainly laying down possibly do to a lameness that is not in the leg the vaccine was administered is not suggestive of a reaction to me.
