Hi Dr. O, I believe my pony mare has had a true false pregnancy. We tried to breed her twice last spring by a.i. vet checked,by ultrasound, at 17 days after the last breeding and deemed her open. I decided to leave her open and try again in early March. May 19 2010 was day last bred. She was under lights all winter to bring her into season early. Due to finances, I decided to not breed her. Well, April 1st, of all days, she started to bag up. Had my vet palpate her and again she deemed her open. She said the spring grass can some times make mares produce a little milk due to the estrogen in the grass and that it would stop and she would dry up. I was fine with that. She continued to produce milk, her abdomen continued to grow, she started sleeping a lot more, she was uncomfortable lying on her side, started developing edema on her sides, she looks back at her sides as if she were feeling something, and still hasn't come into season. Two weeks ago, I had a second vet come out to palpate her and he said not pregnant. He said that she was the most pregnant looking and acting nonpregnant mare that he has ever seen. First vet came back out and said that we should short cycle her so we can get her cycling normally so we can try and breed her again next yr. Gave her the shot and she cramped and sweated like you would expect but a week later, she still hasn't come into season. Her udder is bigger and she is still showing all of the other symptoms. Nothing has changed. Any ideas what is going on with her? I was thinking that we should ultrasound her. She had not been since the 17 day check. If she actually isn't pregnant, what would cause this and how do we fix it? I do think that she may have been exposed to tall fescue if that helps. It's the strangest thing. Please help us figure this out.

Welcome Jenn, At this time it is uncertain what is going on. I think a good physical exam including ultrasound of the reproductive tract makes a lot of sense. If she continues to not cycle regularly 12 days of Regumate can correct a lot of problems. DrO
