I have a mare that aborted at 9 months last year. Unfortunatly,we never found the fetus to determine the cause of this abortion. My veterinarian treated her and we choose to re breed her again. She is now 8 months in foal and I'm trying to decide if I should have a external ultrasound done. Her pregnancy is going normal and there is no signs of Any trouble however, there wasn't last year either. She is a 10 year old mare and in good health. Can anyone shed some light on if it is beneficial to have her ultra sounded?

Welcome Aimee, Do you know what the mare aborted last year? In general much more information about the fetus, cervix and placenta can be obtained from a transrectal ultrasound so if the decision is made to do this, I recommend transrectal. DrO

Dr. Oglesby, thank you for your response. We do not know why my mare aborted last year. She was a maiden mare and she was AI. Everything went normal and there were not any indicators of pending abortion. We never found a Fetus to do any testing. We treated her with antibiotics and butte and waited until April to breed her back. She had a culture done before breeding back and it was clean. We breed her back this year AI and it has been normal. However, i have just had a gut feeling telling me to get a Trans abdominal Ultra sound done. Since i didnt know why she aborted the previous year. I just had the US done on 12-8-11 and found out she has Placentitis. Her combined measurement of the Uterus and Placenta was 38MM. We are treating her with Uniprim, Bannamine,Regumate and Pentoxifylline. The culture came back inconclusive so the lab is running another test to see if any uterine bacteria will grow. The fetal heart rate was 95 and the size was normal. I’m being Optimistic that we can save this foal due to detecting it before any clinical signs. I will be having another Ultra Sound done in 10 days to verify if the antibiotics are working. My vet and I believe this may be why she aborted last year however; we do not have any proof.

You never found a fetus? How far along was she? Are you positive she aborted? Or could she have reabsorbed? Or not been pg? I've seen both happen so amjustcurious. Thanks.

No she was definitely pregnant and she was 9 months. We were on vacation when she aborted And the person taking care of her did not realize she had aborted. So when we got home and noticed immediately we searched the whole property and could not find anything. We believe a coyote took the fetus. My veterinarian had been out the previous month for vaccinations and wellness. My mare was fine at that time and very pregnant.

Dr O. My mares culture came back as Streptococcus and we are going to change her antibiotics and continue with the regumate and Pentoxifylline. However, my vet is suggesting putting in a caslik? I also forgot to mention the mare progesterone came back 6.5 which I'm told is well with in the normal range.

The Caslick's would be indicated if the vulvar lips or seal are imperfect, is this the case? To read more about placentitis see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Reproductive Diseases » Problems During Pregnancy » Placentitis. DrO
