My colt was born the end of March and was on schedule shedding his foal coat. As he started to shed he started growing a heavy coat as he would for winter. I have never had a foal do this in the past. He has always been turned out in pasture with shelter etc., wormed too. We have HOT summers and I feel sorry for him. Thought I would check to see if this is a sign of something I should be concerned about. His mother is slick. Thanks

Are your nights pretty cool? If the colt is getting hot and sweaty under his coat, you could do a partial clipping, but you might have to blanket him if your nights are cool.

It is not the temperature, it is the shortening daylight. Apparently this guy's system seems to think that it is too late to start a summer coat. I agree that managing this guy to decrease heat stress is important and if you clip you may find you have to manage for too cold in the winter. In a well designed barn with a fan during the day might be the best management.

I'm not inclined to clip this colt either. He is out in pasture, has shade and we water overhead so he does stand in the sprinklers sometimes. I am wondering if the fact that I had the mare under lights during the winter may have programed his body clock wrong? Thanks for your input.

It is a possibility Mary Jo but this does not always happen.
