There is a new site called ColorFoal. They have some geneticists working there and their site kind of gives percentages of what colors or patterns you can get from breedings. I liked the site but have a question. I emailed them and told them that I stand a double homozygous stallion. He's homozygous for tobiano and black. They already had info on there about homozygous for tobiano. They added another section for the dominant black gene after I emailed them. I just received this: Ginger, Thanks. I just wanted to let you know that one of the geneticists that I work with got back from vacation, saw the dominant black stuff, and threw a fit. She said that it had been recently proved that the dominant black gene does not exist. That once tested, it was found to be a "figment of the imagination" although it is mentioned in most of the recent main equine genetics books that I have. I trust her and I have found quite a bit of incorrect info in the books aside from this, so I took it off. Sorry for any confusion, but they are proving/disproving mechanisms all of the time. All of the other color stuff is correct. I am also working on a really nifty "draw your own pattern" calculator right now. It should be up in another month or so. Will let you know. |

I am unaware that the black gene has been removed from the horse's genetics or that it has lost its dominant characteristic. DrO |

There is a black gene and it is dominant in some cases. I have a friend who has a homozygous with the black gene. He throws black and white or dkbay and white babies, always. No sorrels. He is a Paint. These outfits don't do their homework sometimes and listen to the wrong people. Just because they did a study doesn't mean they did it correctly. EO |

Hi Ginger, Just out of curiosity, }what is the sites address. I have known homozygous (black & white) stallions that have produced only black & whites over many years. I would find it very interesting to compare notes with these people. Colors intrigue me. Thanks. |
