Hi Everyone,
Below is a picture of my black and white registered QH that has three white socks, a large white blaze and two blue eyes. She is still shedding her winter coat (two year old birthday picture). I have always wanted to have a black and white Overo paint. I have read that QH usually don’t carry the LWO gene related disorder. If I breed her I want to breed responsibly and I would like some advice about what tests I need to have on her in order to ensure she doesn’t carry any possible genetic disorders to determine if I want to breed or not. For that matter does anybody think I would have a chance of getting an Overo from her if I breed her to an Overo Stallion?

Sorry for the blunder on the pic. Let's try this one.

Judith, I am not a paint breeder but she appears to have some splash coloring to her.... Her large white blaze that almost looks like an anvil/ blue eyes... her right hind stocking.. Does she have white under her chin.. if so maybe she is a carrier of sabino..

just my input...
On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with SPOTS..

Ann,
Yes she does have some white on her chin. The white is continuous. Her dam was an all black and her sire was a sorrel with all the chrome. When I purchased her I did notice that all his other babies were sorrels, but her dam was the only black he was breed to.

Judith when you say all the chrome.. do you mean high white socks with a large blaze..? Again I am not a paint breeder but do know that the splash or sabino gene can activate white patterning... with Apps it can be misleading to us trying to figure out a genotype of the horse...and can come up generations later by surprise :-(

I am sure there are some paint breeders that might be able to help you here..

Ann,
When I say chrome I do mean the large blaze, and socks. I have been reading up on some of the difficulties of breeding for pattern and color in paints and appys as well. That's why I broke down and wrote the post. I was hoping that some of the paint breeder's would help. It's easy to find out what the history of color is but it takes much longer to find out the blaze, and sock patterns that her ancestors may have had. She has a pretty good QH pedigree, but I want to breed her for genetic compatibility as well. Do you think she could be a LWO carrier?

Judith, I'm new to paint horses, but if she does only have the sabino gene then she could not be a LWO carrier. There is a test that you can have run if you are unsure.

I think UCD runs the LW test... all you would have to do is send them a hair i believe...

Yes it is the Uni of CA that runs the test and the aticle in this topic links you to the UCal site that explains about overo and lethal white genes and how to submit samples, addresses, fees, etc... It is not really a hair they want but a clump of hair roots form the mane or the tail.
